An Industry Leader in Emissions Reduction

Environmental Stewardship

Our commitment to corporate stewardship begins with our belief that we’re only as strong as the communities we serve. It’s a balance of delivering reliable and affordable electricity to our customers and maintaining a culture of innovation and environmental stewardship that can serve the needs of our communities now and in the future.

REDUCING FLEET VEHICLE EMISSIONS

OG&E, a recognized industry leader in emissions reductions, recently announced its goal to decrease emissions from the company’s fleet vehicles by 60% over current levels by 2030. The company will replace 50% of light duty vehicles (LDVs) with electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025 and 100% of LDVs with EVs by 2030. In addition, OG&E will begin replacing its medium and heavy-duty trucks with more fuel-efficient vehicles. These will include vehicles with Electric Power Take Off (EPTO) equipment, where possible.

Please visit our Stewardship Activities page for additional stories about what OG&E is doing to improve our communities.

Environment

Balancing the interests and needs of our customers, shareholders, and the Oklahoma and Arkansas economies is our top priority at OG&E. We continuously evaluate the needs of our stakeholders through the process of retiring and replacing generation, while meeting the ever-dynamic and growing needs of our communities and honoring our commitment to minimize our environmental footprint.

Our actions to date reinforce our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint. Today, we are at the forefront of our industry. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions have decreased by approximately 90%, nitrogen oxide (NOx) by approximately 75% and carbon dioxide (CO2) by over 40%, below 2005 levels.

As part of our continuous and sustainable decline in emissions over time, OG&E is expecting to reduce our CO2 emissions to 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.

Between 2030 and 2050, OG&E expects to retire 95 percent of its current fossil-fueled generation, cost-effectively meeting our capacity requirements by replacing retiring generation with newer technology including high-efficiency natural gas or zero-emitting technology such as renewables or batteries.

OG&E announced it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicle fleets an estimated 60% by 2030. To achieve the goal, we will replace 50 percent of our light-duty vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025 and 100 percent by 2030. We also will purchase more fuel-efficient medium- and heavy-duty trucks and, where possible, reduce engine idling emissions by using Electric Power Take Off (ePTO) systems. ePTO powers aerial buckets, cranes, hoists, augurs, and other large vehicle-mounted equipment with electricity instead of a diesel fueled engine. These actions will reduce GHG emissions by reducing or eliminating the consumption of energy from non-renewable sources such as gasoline and diesel fuel.

OG&E Actions Taken Between 2005 and 2020

  • Added over 1,800 MW highly efficient, less carbon-intensive, combined-cycle natural gas units.
  • Retired 630 MW of older, inefficient gas generation.
  • Added 460 MW of high-efficiency, quick start turbines which provide critical reliability support for Oklahoma’s rapidly-growing wind supply as well as help displace higher-emitting generation in the SPP.
  • In 2020 we added two solar farms in southeast Oklahoma and we’re continuing our solar expansion with our first solar farm in Arkansas. It is currently in the construction phase and we expect it to be operational in the second half of 2021.
  • Added 340 MW of wind generation to Oklahoma with Purchase Power Agreements for up to 400 MW of wind.
  • Increased investment in energy efficiency and conservation.
  • Implemented 100 percent deployment of smart meters which has enabled and empowered customers to manage their usage, reducing annual demand on the grid by approximately 150 MW.
  • Creation and implementation of the SmartHours program which incentivizes customer use at “off-peak” times and delays the need for new peaking generation.

Participation in market-based dispatching of generation has resulted in a reduction of 5 million tons of CO2 annually and commensurate cost savings for customers.
