Promoting a Culture of Safety

OGE Safety Coin

What does the coin stand for?

The purpose of the safety coin is to provide each member with a tangible reminder of the company’s value of Individual Safety and Wellbeing. Values, beliefs and culture are difficult to hold in your hand or put in your pocket, so the weight of the safety coin is meant to remind members of their commitment to creating and sustaining an incident-and injury-free culture at OGE Energy.

Recommended safety coin usage:

  • All members – field, staff, office and corporate – should carry the safety coin at all times while at work and in a manner that draws your attention to the coin to remind them of their commitment to safety throughout the day
  • Members should routinely inquire whether other members are carrying their safety coin and highlight to one another their commitment to an incident- and injury-free culture

Safety Recognition Programs

Safety excellence is an essential element of OGE’s culture. It’s the performance standard of “one accident is too many,” and is modeled by living our Safety Principles. Safety excellence is realized when we sustain an incident-and-injury-free workplace and lifestyle. Striving for safety excellence is the responsibility of every member and every leader.

For several years, the company awarded the President’s Safety Excellence Award to functional areas – recognizing the lowest incident rate and most improved incident rate. The award is now given annually to a work group nominated by an officer of the company and selected by the president for demonstrating and achieving Safety Excellence, being incident-and-injury-free, while also demonstrating the company’s Safety Principles, Values and Beliefs.

The Safety Recognition Program rewards Members who have acted in such a way as to promote OGE’s Safety-related values, beliefs and principles.

Actions or behaviors that warrant recognition can include:

  • Demonstrating an OGE Safety Principle
  • Suggestions for continuous improvement opportunities, and engaging in a process that results in Process/SSOP/SOP improvement or creation
  • Accountability (See It, Own It, Solve It, Do It) related to a hazard or risk, and following through to completion of corrective actions
  • Reporting a significant Near Miss that results in issuance of a Safety Alert or implementation of a Corrective Action Plan
  • Life-Saving acts that do not endanger the member’s own safety
  • Identifying hazards, risky behaviors or unacceptable risk acceptance; taking action and following through to completion corrective actions

Safety Excellence Career Achievement Award

The Career Achievement Award, a component of the recognition program, recognizes members who demonstrate a constant, long-term commitment to fulfilling their Safety Excellence responsibility. This document provides an overview of the Career Achievement Award.

OGE Athlete

A proactive approach to reducing strains and sprains

The work many of our employees do is physically demanding, and similar to any athletic endeavor, proper preparation results in higher levels of performance and reduced risk of injury. That’s why OGE launched a fitness program to help reduce strains and sprains among members. The program, called OGE Athlete, helps members enhance their range of motion by warming up muscles and engaging in preventative exercises/stretches. Members also receive a “Functional Movement Screen” to identify potential movement dysfunctions and are issued a sports kit that includes tools to facilitate daily warmup and stretching activities.

After a successful pilot and completing our first year with OG&E Athlete, the Company has experienced a 70 percent reduction in sprain and strain recordable injuries and our members are reporting increased mobility and feeling better both on and off the job.
